Short Rows I
October 13 – November 9 , 2024
Week 1
Short Rows Basics
Learn the basics of short row techniques, and practice with making pie shapes of various angles. Students will also learn how to bring needles back into work, and holding needles on both ends of the knitting to create bumps - commonly used in sock heels.
Week 2
Short Rows & Patterns I – Colorblocks
Combine short rows and striping to creating eye-catching effects. Use the magic of short rows to make colorful patterns reminiscent of intarsia.
Week 3
Short Rows & Patterns II – Fairisle
Learn how to combine fairisle with short rows to create intricate patterns. We will show you the steps to program the selection row, so the fairisle pattern shows up seamlessly in a certain area of the fabric. All you need is the patience and courage to give that a go.
Week 4
Short Rows in Garments
Explore how short rows are used in garment shaping – sleevehead, dart, hat, and crew-neck, all use a combination of short rows and decreases to create the shape. Helen will also share a story about the fashion back shoulder, where the shoulder seams were shifted to the back of the garment.
Zoom Meeting
There will be a zoom meeting on Saturday November 9, 2024. Details will be shared with participants in email.
Short rows II
November 30 - December 7, 2024
Week 5
Making Slits & Holes
A vertical or horizontal slit in the fabric? No problem! We will work on both of these techniques and a couple of more ways to make holes and then try some edgings and ruffles all worked with short rows.
Week 6
Sculptureal Fabrics
You may have seen those crazy, sculptural knits and wondered how to do them. This week we will take the plunge and create some of these experimental fabrics.
Week 7
Going Round in Circles, Squares and triangles
Wrapping up the short row techniques we have some two dimensional geometric shapes - circles, square and triangles. Then a ball, before a challenge to sketch out a few ideas of your own.
Week 8
Project: Baby jacket, or…?
A clever baby jacket knit entirely in one piece with all of the shaping done with short rows. You will have all of the instructions to knit this…or something of your own devising.
Zoom Meeting
There will be a second zoom meeting hosted by Helen on Saturday December 7, 2024. Details will be shared with participants in email.
Additional Information
The KAL is limited to 40 spots, but there will be a wait list in case any-one drops out.
1 week prior to the event: Participants will be granted access to the class closed forum
Students will receive an email reminder every week, with that week’s subject.
Students will have access to the class and forum for 2 extra weeks after week 8. That gives our participants plenty of time to finish up the practice project, or revisit any subjects covered in this class.
