Build knowledge and skill in machine knitting from the ground up. This class focuses on the main bed of the machine and covers all of the basics, starting with learning the parts of the machine and how to thread it. As well as machine knitting techniques, you will learn about yarn for machine knitting and how (and why) to make a perfect tension swatch.

Date: February 9th - March 8th, 2025
Cost: $30

Registration closes on February 1, 11:59pm PST

Preparation Week
Anatomy of the machine and yarn

We will start with the main bed of the machine, naming the parts and learning how to correctly thread the tension unit. You will also get a crash course on yarn specifically for machine knitting.

Week 1
Getting some knitting on the machine

Picture of E-Wrap on standard gauge machine

We will learn about stitch lengths, and how tension affects the fabric. Next we will look at several cast-on methods and compare their behavior and appearance, so you can pick a preferred method.

Week 2
Different ways to start a knitted piece

We will show you 4 more ways to start a piece of knitting using the main bed, each with different characteristics. These are great if you want to add a more stable start to your fabric without the ribber attachment.

Week 3
Binding off and making a tension swatch

Transfer Tool Bind-Off

We are going to look at two ways to bind off - the transfer tool bind-off and the latch tool bind-off. We will also learn how to make and measure a tension swatch, and how to properly steam and wet-finish knitted fabric. Before a final project, we will show you how to change color and make stripes.

Week 4
Practice project

To wrap up this KAL, we offer two project patterns to implement your new skills - a big scarf, and a neck warmer.

zoom Meeting

We will be a zoom meeting at the end of week 4 to celebrate and talk about machine knitting. Zoom link will be emailed to participants at the beginning of week 4.
